By Bernie Parsons - May 1, 2001 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Acts 6:1 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, My brothers in the church often lament the decline in attendance and membership. They are often heard to say that no one wants to hear the Bible any more, no one cares about their soul, no one is willing to believe in Jesus, and in God. My answer to them for many years has been that if we would actually believe and obey the word of God, the membership would grow. For my evidence, I look to the scriptures. Acts 6:1-7 "And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. "And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith." 1 Timothy 5:3-4 "Honour widows that are widows indeed. But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God." 1 Timothy 5:16 "If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed." James 1:27 "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." James 2:5-6 "Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?" Why is it that we want to fill the pews with the rich, while we secretly hope that the poor will not find out about us? When we express charity toward our fellow Christians, and the community around us, the world takes note. Unfortunately, as one brother said a few years ago, "But if we help one poor family, word will get out and the building will be full of poor people!" Amen! Isn't that the point? To serve folks so that they see Christ in us and say, "Hey, that is what the Bible talks about. Those people are truly Christians!" 1 Corinthians 1:26 "For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:" Deuteronomy 15:9-11 "Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee. Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land." We would do well to go back and search the Old Testament writings for evidence of how God would have us deal with the needy. He gives us instructions on how to lessen poverty in the land, and especially among the believers. Then when we read what the Apostles wrote in the New Testament writings, we can truly understand what the will of the Lord is! God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 2, 2001 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:10 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, Sometimes my brothers and sisters in the church grudgingly acknowledge that we ought to help the poor saints, but say that we cannot assist those who are not "church members". Sadly, they show their ignorance and their covetousness. The very people who make that statement often quote a verse totally out of its context, usually misquoting it. They say, "The Bible says that we are to 'do good unto them of the household of faith'". Here is what they are referring to: Galatians 6:8-10 "For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith." Any good Bible student should quickly pick up on the fact that the verse says to "do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith". It did not say, "only to them of the household of faith". The admonition is to do good unto all men. When the Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian church about collecting for the needy saints, he also mentioned "all men". 2 Corinthians 9:12-13 "For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God; Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men;" Our ministration to the needy includes others in the community besides the church members. When we look back to the Old Testament again for the pattern of God's thinking on this important subject, we find some important statements. Leviticus 23:22 "And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger: I am the LORD your God." Deuteronomy 10:17-18 "For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward: He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment." Deuteronomy 14:29 "And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest." Deuteronomy 24:20 "When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow." Deuteronomy 24:21 "When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow." The great love and mercy of God is displayed to those who are not believers by those who are. In this way, the light of Jesus Christ shines through us to light a dark world. Matthew 5:14-16 "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 3, 2001 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. 1 Corinthians 16:2 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, One of the most misquoted and wrongly taught scriptures is the subject of "lay by in store" as many call it, or the church money collection. When quoted by preachers in sermons or by brothers assisting at the Lord's table, many only partially quote 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 by saying, "Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him". They usually append a hasty explanation "that the work of the church may be carried on". (When asked what "the work of the church" is, most reply, "Oh, you know, building maintenance and preaching the gospel".) At the very least, this is incomplete and at its worst is an attempt to pervert the truth of God's word! First let me say that there is no five-item list in the Bible called "The Five Items Of Worship", although I have heard many a sermon on that non-existent subject. Next let me hasten to point out that this is not a "commandment for the church" as I have again heard preached. This "order" was directed at specific congregations regarding a specific need of the poor saints in Jerusalem. Although in 1 Corinthians, Apostle Paul referred to it as an order, he later backed off this strong statement. 2 Corinthians 8:1-10 "Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God. Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also. "Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love. For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago." Christians are often loathe to part with their money, and it may well be that some of the Corinthian Christians balked at sharing the wealth. Paul's "commandment" was retracted--note 2 Corinthians 8:8and instead was reissued as "advice"verse 10. The tone is now one of pleading, of appealing to compassion, and of practicality. The example of Jesus is invoked to touch their hearts. What we see here is a godly plea for compassionate sharing with those Christians in need down in Jerusalem. Paul asked them to put aside a giftan offering of money or material goodson the first day of the week (every week, or just the week after the letter was read aloud in the assembly? Put aside in each home, or gathered into a central storehouse?) that could be taken to Jerusalem to relieve the suffering Christians there. This was to be a one-time trip, thus the admonition to gather the gift ahead of time "that there be no gatherings when I come". It makes sense that the gift is less damaging to the giver if done incrementally, and over time the gift will be much more substantial than if Paul just blew into town and said, "Okay, what have you got that you can spare today?" He also throws in a little guilt and shame, when he mentions how that he had bragged to other Christians how that the Corinthians would come through. 2 Corinthians 9:3-6 "Yet have I sent the brethren, lest our boasting of you should be in vain in this behalf; that, as I said, ye may be ready: Lest haply if they of Macedonia come with me, and find you unprepared, we (that we say not, ye) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting. Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness. But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully." Romans 15:25-27 "But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints. For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem. It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things." Galatians 2:9-10 "And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do." What we have is not a "church commandment" which is one of "five items of worship", but rather a godly example of God's people helping one another in a way that doesn't put undue burden upon the givers. By laying aside "in store", the Christian givers were building a treasury, as it were, to be sent to the poor saints in Jerusalem. 2 Corinthians 8:13-15 "For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened: But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality: As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack." By storing it up over time, no one is overly burdened, yet the needy are assisted by their Christian brothers and sisters. We can follow this same example today of how to accumulate wealth in the church to meet the needs of needy saints, and others. If we research giving in the Old Testament, then come forward and read what the New Testament writers had to say about helping others, it quickly becomes obvious what God expects us to do. Galatians 6:2 "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ." God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 4, 2001 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. 1 Corinthians 16:1 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, Our brothers in the church have "denominationlized" the church by making up doctrines, then allowing them to become so traditional that we are not only brainwashed into thinking that they are true, but we reject anyone who doesn't agree that they must be practiced without fail, and without variation. One such doctrine is the "church collection", or "lay by in store", to use two of the more common descriptions. It is often described as a means to "carry on the work of the church". The "work of the church" is then defined as building and maintaining a church building, and "preaching the gospel". The definition of "preaching the gospel" is given as paying the visiting evangelist who "holds a gospel meeting". A "gospel meeting" is a "Church of Christ" variation of a "revival meeting". See how many explanations we would have to give to someone who is "non-Church of Christ" in order to get them to understand what we are talking about? They would not be able to merely read their Bible to get all this, it would have to be explained. Why is this? Because we have corrupted the true meaning of certain scriptures. First of all, the collection was originated to take care of the needy saints. It was not a "temple fund" or a "building fund". In fact, there is no mention whatsoever in the New Testament of Christians building a "church building". God had the temple in Jerusalem destroyed for a reason. We are now the temple of God. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." 2 Corinthians 6:16 "And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people." Furthermore, the collection mentioned in I Corinthians 16 and several chapters of II Corinthians was not designated to pay evangelists. Stranger than this is the fact than many church members distinguish between paying the evangelist and the local "preacher", "minister", or " pastor". Many have argued that the collection may be used for evangelists to spread the gospel, but cannot be used to "pay the preacher". Why not adopt the scriptural ways? Why not meet in people's houses for assembly (what some call "worship service" or "church service"--two more unscriptural phrases)? Acts 2:46-47 "And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved." Acts 20:19-21 "Serving the LORD with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ." Acts 10:2 "And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and he had called together his kinsmen and near friends." Acts 10:27 "And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together." Acts 11:12-15 "And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man's house: And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter; Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved. And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning." Acts 16:32 "And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house." Without an expensive "church building", we would have more of our wealth to assist one another, as well as the needy in our communities, and to take the gospel into all the world. We could also get away from the notion that the building is the "church". It is not. We are the church. 1 Corinthians 12:27 "Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular." Colossians 1:18 "And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence." What about paying the preacher? That is an entire discussion unto itself! God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 7, 2001 Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness. 2 Corinthians 9:5 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, How much should a Christian contribute to the church collection on Sunday? Many preachers say, "10%", or a "tithe", as was done under the Law of Moses. Still others say, "More than 10%, because our 'righteousness must exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees'". They reason that since the Pharisees lived under the Law of Moses and had to tithe, then we have to do better than that. (Never mind that they have just extracted another portion of scripture from its context, and have perverted it. This statement regarding the righteousness of the Pharisees had to do with their inclination to preach the Law, but not follow it personally.) Matthew 23:1-4 "Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers." Matthew 5:19-20 "Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven." How much should we give? We could do like the early Christians in Jerusalem, and give 100%. Acts 2:44-45 "And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need." Acts 4:32-35 "And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need." Or we could give cheerfully and generously according to the amount of our prosperity, as Paul asked. When God is generous with us, we need to be generous with others. 1 Corinthians 16:2 "Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come." 2 Corinthians 9:5-7 "Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness. But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 8:13-15 "For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened: But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality: As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack." There is no set percentage of what we are to give. We are to give as the situation demands and as our heart dictates, if our heart is led by the compassionate Holy Spirit of God. Anything said more or less than this departs from scriptural teaching and is only a man-made doctrine. Matthew 6:21 "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 8, 2001 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. 1 Timothy 5:18 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, I have heard many debates within the church over the years as to whether we should "pay the preacher". What amazes me is the lack of Bible knowledge during these discussions. Anyone who has done much reading at all knows the answer to that question. There was a system under the Law of Moses to fund the building of the tabernacle, to finance the "church treasury", and to "pay the preachers". Exodus 30:13-16 "This they shall give, every one that passeth among them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary: (a shekel is twenty gerahs:) an half shekel shall be the offering of the LORD. Every one that passeth among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an offering unto the LORD. The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls. And thou shalt take the atonement money of the children of Israel, and shalt appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; that it may be a memorial unto the children of Israel before the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls." Exodus 35:21-36:7 "And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the LORD's offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments. And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold: and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the LORD. And every man, with whom was found blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats' hair, and red skins of rams, and badgers' skins, brought them. Every one that did offer an offering of silver and brass brought the LORD's offering: and every man, with whom was found shittim wood for any work of the service, brought it. And all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen. And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goats' hair. And the rulers brought onyx stones, and stones to be set, for the ephod, and for the breastplate; And spice, and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the sweet incense. The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the LORD, every man and woman, whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work, which the LORD had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses. And they received of Moses all the offering, which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, to make it withal. And they brought yet unto him free offerings every morning. And all the wise men, that wrought all the work of the sanctuary, came every man from his work which they made; And they spake unto Moses, saying, The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work, which the LORD commanded to make. And Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary. So the people were restrained from bringing. For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much." Wouldn't it be great if we could tell the members today to quit giving, because they gave too much? Numbers 18:25-31 "And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe. And this your heave offering shall be reckoned unto you, as though it were the corn of the threshingfloor, and as the fulness of the winepress. Thus ye also shall offer an heave offering unto the LORD of all your tithes, which ye receive of the children of Israel; and ye shall give thereof the LORD's heave offering to Aaron the priest. Out of all your gifts ye shall offer every heave offering of the LORD, of all the best thereof, even the hallowed part thereof out of it. Therefore thou shalt say unto them, When ye have heaved the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted unto the Levites as the increase of the threshingfloor, and as the increase of the winepress. And ye shall eat it in every place, ye and your households: for it is your reward for your service in the tabernacle of the congregation." The tithe was for the Levites, the priesthood of God, and they were to give ten per cent of that to Aaron, their chief priest. The Levites were not given a piece of the promised land to farm, or to raise fruit trees, or livestock. Their job was to minister to the souls of God's people. Deuteronomy 12:19 "Take heed to thyself that thou forsake not the Levite as long as thou livest upon the earth." Deuteronomy 14:27-29 "And the Levite that is within thy gates; thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no part nor inheritance with thee. At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates: And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest." Pay the preacher? I reckon they did! 2 Chronicles 31:4-6 "Moreover he commanded the people that dwelt in Jerusalem to give the portion of the priests and the Levites, that they might be encouraged in the law of the LORD. And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly. And concerning the children of Israel and Judah, that dwelt in the cities of Judah, they also brought in the tithe of oxen and sheep, and the tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the LORD their God, and laid them by heaps." Nehemiah 13:10-12 "And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place. Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries." Much more is written in the Old Testament about how the priests of God were to be supported by the general population of God's people. It's a real eye-opener! God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 9, 2001 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 1 Timothy 5:17 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, The priesthood under the Law of Moses was supported by the general population of God's people. How does that compare to what the New Testament says about supporting those who labour among the flock of Christians? 1 Corinthians 9:6-11 "Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working? Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?" Some say, "But Apostle Paul worked at his tent-making craft, to keep from burdening the church." Paul did that because some Christians were tight with their money, as were the Corinthians. Yet he took support from Macedonian Christians while he was among the Christians in Achaia (Corinth). 2 Corinthians 11:7-9 "Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely? I robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service. And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself." Jesus said that the believers were to support the Apostles and traveling, preaching disciples. Mark 10:28-30 "Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life." Jesus Himself took financial support from His followers. Luke 8:1-3 "And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance." Mark 15:40-41 "There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem." Apostle Paul was not above bragging on those who helped support him, and laying a "guilt trip" on those who did not. Philippians 2:25 "Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants." Philippians 2:30 "Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me." 2 Timothy 1:16-18 "The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well." Romans 16:1-2 "I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also." 1 Corinthians 16:15-18 "I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,) That ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth with us, and laboureth. I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied. For they have refreshed my spirit and your's: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such." Even the elders were to be supported by the general congregation, and those who taught, doubly so: 1 Timothy 5:17-18 "Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward." God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 10, 2001 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day Deuteronomy 8:18 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, God gave a plan to the Israelites whereby that whole nation of God might prosper and become wealthy. Those same principles are relevant to Christians. Let's examine the concepts. First of all, God warned them against thinking that their wealth was self-made. Deuteronomy 8:11-18 "Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint; Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end; And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day." Another important concept was that usury (interest) was not to be charged to fellow Israelites. Interest depletes wealth. Exodus 22:25 "If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury." Leviticus 25:35-37 "And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee. Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase." Furthermore, the Israelites were allowed to lend to Gentiles, charging them interest, but were not to borrow from the Gentiles. They were to borrow from their Israelite brethren. Deuteronomy 28:12 "The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow." There is also the concept of jubilee, or release, in which debts were forgiven and servants returned to freedom. Deuteronomy 15:1-6 "At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release. And this is the manner of the release: Every creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called the LORD's release. Of a foreigner thou mayest exact it again: but that which is thine with thy brother thine hand shall release; Save when there shall be no poor among you; for the LORD shall greatly bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it: Only if thou carefully hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all these commandments which I command thee this day. For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee." The poor were not be be abused, and were to be paid upon the day that the work was done. Deuteronomy 24:12-15 "And if the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge: In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates: At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee." By these means did God create wealth in Israel: interest was not charged to brethren, only to strangers; brethren loaned to brethren to help them out in hard times; loans were not obtained from the unbelievers; the poor were paid the day that the work was performed; the poor were given a part of the increase enjoyed by the wealthy; debts were periodically forgiven, land was restored, and servitude ended in order to help the poor become less so--this was called jubilee, or release. The wealth comes from God, and is to be used in His service. Deuteronomy 28:8-9 "The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. The LORD shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways." God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 11, 2001 But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality: 2 Corinthians 8:14 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, Through the Law of Moses, God gave the Israelites a method to create wealth in that chosen nation. Through interest-free loans to their brethren, the wealthy sharing with the poor, forgiving the debts of the poor, not borrowing from unbelievers, and paying the poor workers the day they performed their work, the nation became wealthy. Jesus and the Apostle Paul used these godly concepts to distribute wealth in the body of Christ. Matthew 19:21-24 "Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." The wealthy in the church are to share with the needy in the church. 1 Timothy 6:17.18-19 "Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life." 2 Corinthians 8:13 "For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened: But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality: As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack." This is not a mandatory redistribution of wealth as in communism or socialism. Rather, it is a love-driven act of compassion and genuine regard for one's spiritual brothers and sisters. The affluent, out of their surplus, are to assist the poor within the kingdom of God. This is to be done generously, yet willingly. The result is that the church, the body of Christ, has more wealth as a whole. 2 Corinthians 9:5-13 "Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness. But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God. For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God; Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men;" This voluntary redistribution of wealth glorifies God because it exemplifies the same love that God shows toward all of us. Everything belongs to God. We are merely stewards with whom the treasures have been entrusted. We must use them to the glory of God. 2 Corinthians 8:9 "For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich." God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 15, 2001 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Romans 12:11 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, God's people are to be an active and energetic people. Paul listed that as one of the attributes of a Christian. Some folks misunderstand Jesus when He said that we are not to worry about tomorrow, that God will provide. God will, indeed, provide, but also expects us to work for what He gives us. Matthew 6:24-25 "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?" Matthew 6:31-34 "Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." Yet the Bible clearly teaches us that we are to work for a living, not only to sustain ourselves and our families, but also to help others. Proverbs 24:30-34 "I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction.Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man." Proverbs 18:9 "He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster." Proverbs 6:6-11 "Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man." Proverbs 20:4 "The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing." 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread." 1 Timothy 5:8 "But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." Ephesians 4:28 "Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth." God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 16, 2001 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: 1 Peter 3:8 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, There is much work to be done in the service of the Lord. We need to be working within our families, among our friends and acquaintances, and in our communities to show people the ways of the Lord. One of the ways early Christians proved their faith in God and His ways was to minister to those around them. We read of Tabitha, a Christian known for her good deeds. Acts 9:36 "Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did." Acts 9:39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them." Christian widows were not to be maintained by the church unless they had done many good works. 1 Timothy 5:9-10 "Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man. Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work." Matthew 25:34-40 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." Jesus had compassion on the sick, tired, and hungry multitudes. Matthew 9:35-36 "And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd." Matthew 14:14 "And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick." Matthew 15:30-32 "And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them: Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel. Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way." God is compassionate, as is Jesus. As followers of Christ, we are to be compassionate as well.By this we may win souls to Christ as they see the righteousness of God in us. God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 17, 2001 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matthew 25:21KJV Hello, Family & Friends, God holds us responsible for the resources He has given us, as evidenced in the parable regarding stewardship. These may be special abilities, financial wealth, or other resources. Matthew 25:14-30 "For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." What this tells us is that we are to use the blessings of God in His service. We are to get a gain for Him. We do this through service to our fellow Christians, as well as to members of our communities. We will give account of what we have done with His resources. God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 18, 2001 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? Luke 12:42 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, We are being tested in this life as to how we take care of the Lord's blessings and resources with which He empowers us--especially those of us charged with the oversight of God's people. Luke 12:42-46 "And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers." It is easy for us to forget that "the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof". Church leaders often get carried away with their status and power. That power should be the power to lead, not the power to control. Here is what the Apostle Peter had to say about it: 1 Peter 5:1-3 "The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock." There is a danger in letting power go to our heads, as church leaders. James 3:1 "My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation." Matthew 23:8-12 "But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted." It is a grave responsibility to look out for the Lord's people. God bless all! well pleased. Hello, Family & Friends, What good is preaching if it is not the unadulterated word of God? So much of the religious preaching and teaching in the world is the result of people forming opinions, then pressing those opinions upon others. They gather followers and create a religion. The church of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is founded upon basic truths. If your religion is not based upon these truths, you need to re-examine your faith and transfer it to God and His word. Jesus is the Son of God. Matthew 3:16-17 "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." There is life of the spirit after death of the body. 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 "For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time." 1 Corinthians 6:14 "And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power." There is eternal life and eternal death. There is a heaven and a hell. John 3:15-16 "That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." 1 Peter 1:3-4 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you," John 5:29 "And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation." Mark 3:29 "But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation." Matthew 23:33 "Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?" There is a church made up of believing, repentant, and baptized believers. It is described as the body of Jesus Christ, and He as its head. Jesus only has one body. The saved are in that one body (church). Matthew 16:18 "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Mark 16:15-16 "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." Acts 2:38 "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." Acts 2:47 "Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved." Colossians 1:18 "And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence." 1 Corinthians 12:27 "Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular." Romans 12:5 "So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another." 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 "For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit." Ephesians 5:23 "For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body." God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 22, 2001 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Ephesians 5:23 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, Jesus is the savior of the church--His church, also known as His body. We find our salvation in Him. Acts 4:10-12 "Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Acts 2:47 "Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved." There are two aspects to salvation, and Jesus is the means to our salvation in each case. Furthermore, salvation is in the church in each case. There is salvation from past sins--that is, sins committed when we were not Christians. Romans 3:23-26 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus." Acts 2:38 "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." Then there is eternal salvation--which is eternal life. Hebrews 5:8-9 "Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;" Romans 6:8-9 "Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him." John 11:25-26 "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?" Christ is our salvation from past sins, and secures our eternal salvation in heaven. We are His body, His church--sanctified, set aside from the world of sin. Obedient believers are added to the body of Christ by the Lord. Acts 2:47 "Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved." God bless all! Many denominational preachers teach doctrines of "salvation by faith", and "salvation by grace". These same men and women are vehemently opposed to acknowledging that our salvation depends upon anything else. Why--and how--is it that faith saves? It is not mysticism. How does faith in anything work? Faith means that you trust that something will occur. If I have faith that I can travel from my home to my workplace in my automobile, I trust that I will arrive there as intended. Does my faith automatically transport me there? No. But it leads me to get into my automobile, then follow the steps to start it, drive it, park it, and turn it off. Did my faith get me there? It did, else I would never have begun my journey--after all, who embarks upon a journey believing that it cannot be successfully completed?. Did my arrival depend upon anything else? It did--the automobile itself, a tank of gas, a good battery, properly functioning parts, safe travel, and the ability to drive. So it is with faith in Christ. It saves us--delivers us from past sin, and delivers us into heaven--when we have all the necessary components that go with it. In other words, we trust that Christ is the Son of God and that He has the power to deliver on His promises, as well as the integrity to do so. But our salvation is not secured until we follow His "driving" instructions, so to speak. That trust leads us to listen to our Savior's words, then to follow His instructions. Those instructions are contained in the Bible, and we must listen to them and obey them--all of them! Matthew 4:4 "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." 1 John 5:2 "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous." John 5:39 "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." 2 Timothy 2:15 "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 3:14-17 "But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." Mark 4:23-24 "If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given." 1 John 2:2-6 "And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked." James 2:17-20 "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?" If we say that we believe that Jesus will save us (faith), yet we don't do what Jesus instructs us to do, will our "faith" save us? Not if we don't obey the teachings of the one who has promised to save us--no more so than a statement of faith that our car will get us to work will actually transport us there without our following through by getting into the car and driving it. The church I see in the Bible listens to the Lord, and keeps His commandments. God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 24, 2001 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Romans 1:17 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, Faith is not merely an expression of belief--that is actually a "confession" of faith, not faith itself. Faith means that we trust, and if we trust that the promises made will be kept, then we must live by faith. In other words, our life must reflect the trust that we claim to have in God, and in His Son, Jesus. Why is there so much about faith in the New Testament writings of the Apostles? Two reasons: Jews and Gentiles. The Jews believed that a Messiah, or Savior, was to come to deliver them. Their prophets foretold this. It was crucial that they believe that Jesus of Nazareth is that Savior. The Gentiles worshipped false gods and goddesses. They needed to believe in the one true and living God, and in His Son, Jesus, as the sacrificial Lamb of God, offered to take away the sins of the whole world. Although these needs resulted in much discussion of faith in Christ, it did not mean that there was nothing else to do to receive salvation from past sins or from eternal damnation. The process of salvation from past sins involves several phases. First, the gospel of Jesus is preached so that the listener is aware of the facts regarding sin, repentance, and salvation. Mark 16:15-16 "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." Romans 10:17 "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Upon hearing this message, one must believe the truth and the promises of the gospel. Mark 16:16 "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." This faith in Jesus as Savior leads to a realization of disobedience to God, and a recognition that one must turn from sinning against God to listening to Him, and obeying Him. This is repentance. Matthew 4:17 "From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Luke 24:46-47 "And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." After repenting, it is important to confess this new-found faith in Jesus. This lets the world know that you have heard this message, have believed it, and are turning from sinning against God. Matthew 10:32 "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven." Acts 8:36-37 "And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." The next important step is the washing away of past sins by the blood of Jesus. According to scriptures, this takes place during water baptism, or immersion beneath water. Acts 22:16 "And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord." Acts 8:38-39 "And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing." Romans 6:3-4 "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." Our faith then causes us to walk in the ways of Jesus all the days of our lives. Romans 8:1 "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." 2 Corinthians 5:7 "(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)" Hebrews 10:38-39 "Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul." This is how people are added to the church that I see in the Bible. God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 25, 2001 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 1 Peter 2:2 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, Once added to the body of Christ, the newly reborn Christian (of water and spirit) is a hungry spiritual infant, craving the milk that gives life and growth. The church supplies this milk by nurturing the new Christian in Christ's love and instructions. John 3:3 "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3:5 "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." 1 Peter 1:25-2:3 "But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious." Matthew 5:6 "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." Mark 10:15 "Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein." After growing on the spiritual basics, the church assists the maturing Christian in continued growth. Mature Christians are to help the younger and weaker ones, and care must be taken not to harm such a little one in Christ. Matthew 18:6 "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." Romans 14:13 "Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way." Romans 15:1-2 "We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification." The goal is the healthy growth of the church as the living body of Christ. Hebrews 5:12-6:3 "For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit." Ephesians 4:13-16 "Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love." The church I see in the Bible nurtures its newly reborn members as a parent would nurture a newborn child. God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 29, 2001 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Matthew 18:6 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, As the newly reborn Christian takes his or her place in the church, it is the responsibility of more mature Christians to assist, support, and teach that young Christian. Romans 13:14-14:1 "But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations." Romans 14:13 "Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way." Romans 15:1 "We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves." Matthew 18:6 "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." 1 Corinthians 8:9 "But take heed lest by any means this liberty of your's become a stumblingblock to them that are weak." 1 Thessalonians 5:14 "Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men." As we support the weak, and teach them, they are built up--are edified--and grow. Colossians 2:6-7 "As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving." 1 Peter 2:5 "Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ." Ephesians 4:14 "That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:" In the church I see in the Bible, the older and more mature members support and assist the newer Christians so that they grow up spiritually in the Lord. God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 30, 2001 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Galatians 6:1 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, It is tempting to immediately ostracize a member of the church as soon as they do something that we do not agree with. Sometimes that person doesn't even deserve the scorn we heap upon them. There are times when two people can disagree and both be "right". Two such instances are mentioned by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the church at Rome. One is the eating of meat versus being vegetarian, while the other deals with special days--holidays. In both cases, the Lord gave no commandment regarding the subjects under Paul's consideration. Romans 14:2-6 "For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks." There are other cases where one party is clearly not behaving in a Christ-like manner, and must be reprimanded for his recalcitrance. The unruly are to be reprimanded. Matthew 18:15-17 "Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican." 1 Thessalonians 5:14 "Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men." Even so, the erring child of God is to be treated with respect and love. 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15 "And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother." Jude 1:21-23 "Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh." In the church I see in the Bible, the members who make mistakes are restored through love and tenderness. God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie By Bernie Parsons - May 31, 2001 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: Mark 10:43 KJV Hello, Family & Friends, Many religious bodies--churches, if you will--have leadership that is not scriptural. Some have "positions" or "offices" not found in the church of the Bible. Others try to combine too many roles in one leader. I find that the church was loosely organized with all members playing vital roles. 1 Corinthians 12:27 "Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues." Romans 12:3-8 "For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness." Mark 10:42-44 "But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all." A minister is a servant. Some religions have one person that they call "the" minister, who functions as a lord over the congregation. Others treat "the" minister as a surrogate, or proxy, for the entire group. Neither of these roles is scriptural and signify a church that is out of touch with God. In the church of the Bible there were older, expereinced, and mature Christian men known as elders, whose duty it was to oversee the congregation by teaching, guiding, and leading them. These elders are also referred to as bishops--from a root word that means "overseer"--who are shepherds of the soul. The Apostle Peter, who was a bishop, described Jesus as the chief shepherd and bishop of the soul. There were also men described as deacons--from a root word meaning servant-- in the churches. 1 Peter 2:25 "For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls." 1 Peter 5:1 "The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:" Titus 1:5 "For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:" Philippians 1:1 "Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:" 1 Timothy 3:10 "And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless." The church I see in the Bible has elders, deacons, and other leaders who meet the needs of the members--who are the church--rather than running the church as if they were executives of an "organization". God bless all! Love, in Christ, Bernie |
